Rugs can anchor a room, create texture, be an accent piece and so much more in a space. However, rug placement can be tricky and there are many things to take into consideration!
Before you look into patterns and colours, we’ll take a look at one of the most important essentials when buying rugs: placement, size, and shape. Here’s a room-by-room guide to read for our best tips.
Living Room
They’re plush, pretty, and add a level of comfort that makes you want to curl up and lounge in style. In choosing rugs for the living room, there are two principles to follow:
Under the Furniture - for open plan living rooms, the rug should be big enough to fit under the two front legs of the sofa or main furniture pieces, with at least 6 inches to the sides. This is to ensure that the rug is in proportion to the area, creating a relaxed and inviting space overall.
Classic Layout - if the furniture is against the wall, pick a rug that sits just to the end of the furniture or starts no less than 20cm in front of the sofa. While this look is a bit more formal, best not to pick a rug that’s too small as this creates a space that’s smaller than it usually is.
In choosing a round rug, arrange furniture a little closer to each other as a round rug can make a space feel more intimate.
Dining Room
There are certain considerations for choosing rugs in the dining area. Always opt for one that can take the wear and tear of constant moving furniture and more likely, a few stains! Spills, dirt, and blemishes can be hard to remove or vacuum so take into consideration a low-pile option.
In the dining room, make sure that the dining chairs are all inside the perimeter of the rug and around the entire table. This is best for all the pulling out of the chair when a person sits down and avoid being a tripping hazard for guests. For more visual symmetry, match the shape of the rug to your table—trust us, it’ll be so pleasing to the eyes!
Bedroom
Wouldn’t it be amazing to step into a cosy rug when you wake up? Rugs in the bedroom add a homey feel as well as an intimate look to your space. A tip is to have the rug be big enough to sit underneath the bed and side tables or for the rug to stop at the side tables entirely.
Another option is to have two runners on either side of the bed for perfect symmetry.
